Yelena Isinbayeva celebrates three new years in one night

While the New Year holiday season is already a dim distant memory for many of us - that is, for those of us in this world who are lucky enough to have a holiday at all - for others the memories of those celebrations are much more recent.

Thirteen days after Western Christmas, on 7 January,

the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated its Christmas, in accordance with the old Julian calendar, and so the public holiday period in Russia only came to an end with the 'back to work' on 11 January.

Russia's World Pole Vault record holder Yelena Isinbayeva, one of our IAAF Diamond League Ambassadors, relates how she spent both New Year and Christmas (she only celebrates the Russian Christmas) with her coach Vitaly Petrov and his daughter Elena.

"First at home we celebrated the Russian New Year which comes 2 hours before central European time. We heard the speech of our president Medvedev on TV and after we made some wishes for 2010."
