Amantle Montsho favoured to retain diamond title

The track star clocked 50.03 seconds behind Richards-Ross who breasted the tape at 49.89 seconds. Olympic silver medallist, Christine Ohuruogo of Great Britain finished third at 50.77 seconds. Montsho now stands as favourite to retain the diamond race that carries U$ 40, 000 prize money. She now leads the pack with 16 diamond points to Richards-Ross's eight points on second position with only one meet left in Zurich, Switzerland, on August 30.
Montsho has so far won two races, one in Oslo, Norway, in June and another one in Paris last month. In addition, she finished second on three occasions. She finished second in the first race of the league in Shanghai, China, on May 19 before finishing runner_up again behind Richards-Ross in Eugene, United States of America (US) on June 2. Just before the start of London 2012 Olympics, she came second again, this time finishing behind Ohuruogo in London. With other contestants far behind the local star in the standings, only Richards-Ross is better placed to challenge Montsho for the top.The diamond race carries four points for first position and two points for second with the final race of the season carrying eight points for position one and four points for runner-up. This means Richards-Ross can only tie with Montsho at the top with 16 points if she wins the Zurich meet and Montsho does not garner any point from the race. Even a third place finish by Montsho in the final race will ensure she is home and dry with her diamond title.
Meanwhile, Montsho and the rest of Team Botswana are expected home from the Olympics today. They will do a countrywide tour to Mookane, Mahalapye, Francistown, Marobela, Tutume, Maun, Gantsi, and Tsabong. Montsho however, would not be available for the whole tour, as she has to get back and prepare for the Zurich meet.
